BECOME A FULL COMMUNITY SPONSOR

©Salvation Army Raynes Park Community Sponsorship

The Full Community Sponsorship Scheme enables local community groups and charities to directly support the resettlement of a refugee family into the UK.

Elmbridge CAN does not do this directly but there's some information here to find out a bit more and where to go if you are interested in forming one.

How does it work?

As a Full Community Sponsor, you will be allocated a family and it will be your responsibility to support the family from the moment they arrive in the UK. This includes:
  • meeting the family at the airport
  • providing a warm welcome and cultural orientation
  • providing housing
  • supporting access to medical and social services
  • English language tuition
  • support towards employment and self-sufficiency.

Full Community Sponsors have a formal responsibility to support the resettled family for one year, with the exception of housing, where the responsibility lasts two years. Families are entitled to all usual government benefits, including housing benefit.

COULD YOUR ORGANISATION BE A SPONSOR?

"Community sponsorship offers groups the opportunity to resettle a family and give them a new start. We knew that we had plenty to offer. Community sponsorship opened the door for us… to mobilise people and actually do something." Major Nick Coke, Raynes Park Community Church.

Anyone can start a community sponsorship and they usually include a 'core group' which can be as small as 2 people, but generally around 5 works best, as well as a wider group for specific responsibilities.
