ELMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL ANNOUNCES VACANCY FOR FAMILY SUPPORT COORDINATOR FOR REFUGEES

18 December 2016
We are pleased to announce that Elmbridge Borough Council is now seeking a Family Support Coordinator to help with the resettlement of refugee families in the Boroughs of Elmbridge and Epsom & Ewell*.

This is a critical role and represents a significant step forward by Elmbridge Borough Council in its commitment to resettle up to 15 Syrian refugee families over the next 5 years. Refugee families require a significant amount of support when they arrive in the UK. Their needs range from help with administrative tasks – including registering for bank accounts, benefits, medical services and schools – to local orientations and support learning English, developing their employability and overcoming the trauma they have experienced.

While specialist services and willing volunteers all play a role in supporting families, a Family Support Coordinator will ensure that these needs are properly addressed and that families receive comprehensive support.

Elmbridge CAN Steering Group Member and Volunteer Refugee Support Worker for Reigate, Banstead and Leatherhead District Councils, Susan Eade, said:

“We are extremely pleased that Elmbridge Borough Council has recognised the enormity of the support needs of refugee families and has agreed to fund a specialist role to work directly with families. Having an Arabic speaking support worker will make an indescribable difference to the experience of these families. They will instantly be reassured to hear their mother tongue and be able to communicate their needs and concerns freely without the barriers of language.

We look forward to working with this individual to ensure that the refugee families resettled in Elmbridge are fully cared for and have everything they need to successfully integrate into their new lives here in the UK”.
