Refugee Week is the UK's largest festival celebrating the contribution of refugees and promoting understanding of why people seek sanctuary.
I WELCOME PHOTO EXHIBITION
To mark Refugee Week, Elmbridge CAN is organising an exhibition of photos highlighting global stories of refugees past and present. The 'I Welcome' exhibition has been put together by Amnesty International and Magnum photos.
We'll be showcasing the exhibition in 2 locations:
Holy Trinity Claygate, Church Road, KT10 0JP
The exhibition will be showing in the entrance foyer from Sunday 18 June to Sunday 25 June. The church is open every day, so please pop in.
Walton Library, 54 The Heart, KT12 1GH
The library is situated on the second floor of the Heart shopping centre. The exhibition will be showing from Sunday 18 June to Sunday 25 June. View library opening times here.
WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING?
Welcoming refugees & how you can help, Walton Library, Wednesday 21 June, 3pm
Elmbridge CAN volunteer, Steve Wells will share his experience of hosting Syrian refugee, Karim, through Refugees at Home. He'll also talk a little bit about the work of Elmbridge CAN and how you can support refugees in the local area. Karim will join Steve for the talk so you can hear first hand what it's like being a refugee arriving in the UK. There'll also be an opportunity to ask questions and chat directly with Steve and Karim afterwards.
Story time at Walton Library, Wednesday 21 June, 4pm
Elmbridge CAN volunteer, Mona, will be reading Teacup during children's story time at Walton Library on Wednesday 21 June at 4pm.
Teacup is the story of a young boy forced to leave his home for another land. It's a beautiful book and a gentle introduction to the refugee crisis for young readers. Teacup is suitable for children of all ages. So please do join Mona for this very special story time to mark Refugee Week.
We hope you can make it.
If you're holding an event for Refugee Week and would like us to help you publicise, please get in touch.

Summer get together for refugees
1 July 2017, 4 - 9pm, venue details available to invited guests
Following the success of our Culture Kitchen event in March, the Elmbridge CAN team will be hosting a summer get together for refugees from Elmbridge and the surrounding areas on 1 July.
It'll be a chance for the families and individuals we support to come together and enjoy authentic Middle Eastern food and entertainment.
More than 150 people came to our event in March. Nine year-old, Ahmed, told us "it was the best party I have ever been to."
The people we support often feel alone. We want to help them connect with others who have shared experiences and to build new friendships.
Please note this event is invitation only. If you're a refugee and would like to attend, or you know of any refugees that you think might be interested in coming along, please contact us.
