The Refugee Crisis

The global refugee crisis is the largest and most complex humanitarian crisis of our generation. There are more than 80 million forcibly displaced people worldwide and more than half of all refugees are children.

Many facts and figures have been bandied around in the UK media – some used to inform and educate, others to propagate fear and insecurity.
We feel it's important to have a realistic perspective of:
  • the scale of the refugee crisis
  • the response of the UK and other countries
  • what this response means for our local communities.
The UK's processes for asylum and refugee resettlement are complex and evolving. Learning about them enables us to better understand:
  • How can refugees come to Elmbridge?
  • What happens to those who come illegally?
  • How can we support refugee schemes?
  • How can we influence our Government to take further action?

Find out about the resettlement schemes and read our FAQs for more information.
