About the role
Elmbridge CAN is community group based in Elmbridge in Surrey. We aim to build a culture of welcome to refugees and work to achieve the settlement of more refugees in the Borough of Elmbridge.
We’re looking for a self-employed English Language teacher to plan and deliver an ESOL course for our resettled refugee families. We need someone with experience of teaching English as a foreign language and an understanding of the needs and experiences of refugees. We have secured funding for an initial 6-month period, but there is the potential to extend if the programme is successful.

Salary: Up to £40 per hour (based on experience)
Location: East Molesey, Elmbridge, Surrey
Hours: 2 hours per week direct contact time / Mondays (ideally 10am-12noon) / term-time only

KEY TASKS
- Plan and deliver an English Language course for refugees in the local area, taking into account their varied needs, backgrounds and ability levels.
- Provide a calm, safe and engaging learning environment that ensures the learners’ needs are catered for.
- Work with Elmbridge CAN’s ESOL volunteers to develop course content and map objectives, as appropriate.
- Keep a record of attendance and report general feedback and any concerns to the Elmbridge CAN team.
- Understand your responsibilities in regard to safeguarding and confidentiality and use this to inform every day practice.
- Liaise with other members of the Elmbridge CAN team as needed to fulfil the role.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
Essential
- Relevant qualification e.g. Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (DELTA); Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA); or MA in English Language teaching.
- Recent experience of teaching English as foreign language.
- Excellent planning and organisational skills.
- Strong empathy and communication skills.
- Experience of having worked with people from other cultures (and preferably from the Middle East).
- Understanding of basic safeguarding principles, or a commitment to learn these principles and implement them.
- Passion for the role and commitment to the aims of Elmbridge CAN.
- Previous experience of teaching refugee families.
- Understanding of the issues and experiences of families who are coming to the UK as refugees.
WHAT WE PROVIDE
- Supervision/support from a senior member of the Elmbridge CAN team.
- Volunteers to provide (teaching) support during the class.
