Help Refugees has launched legal action against the Home Office, arguing that ministers have breached their duties to provide sanctuary to some of the thousands of unaccompanied children seeking asylum in Europe.
Help Refugees has launched legal action against the Home Office, arguing that ministers have breached their duties to provide sanctuary to some of the thousands of unaccompanied children seeking asylum in Europe.
The Calais refugee camp – known as the Jungle – is due to be demolished in the next few weeks. There is no plan in place to safely rehome the 1,000 or so unaccompanied children in the camp. Up to 400 of these children are eligible to come to the UK under the Dubs’ amendment to the Immigration Bill or the Dublin agreement.
Despite the Dubs’ Amendment – to resettle at risk unaccompanied asylum-seeking children – being passed in Parliament in May of this year, no children have yet been brought to the UK under this scheme. Children whom this legislation is designed to protect have been left at serious risk of abuse and exploitation. Help Refugees action comes amid rising concern that more children will disappear when the Calais camp is demolished. We’re supporting Help Refugees campaign, calling on the Government to act now to bring eligible children to the UK and protect them from harm. HOW YOU CAN HELP |
