Kingston has welcomed its second family of refugees as part of the Home Office-funded Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement scheme.
Kingston has welcomed its second family of refugees as part of the Home Office-funded Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement scheme.
The news comes after Kingston Council launched a campaign to find private landlords in the Borough.
Councillor Kevin Davis, Leader of Kingston Council said: “We could not have done this without the support of our community and partners. From helping to find and secure properties to joining us in preparing the home for the arriving family… it’s effort like this from volunteers that has helped this initiative to work.” Following on from this success, the Council has renewed its appeal for more landlords to come forward to help meet Kingston’s ambition to resettle 50 refugees in the area. Finding suitable properties is also the greatest challenge to resettling refugee families in Elmbridge. Jeannie Tweedie, co-founder of Elmbridge CAN, said: “Kingston has shown that it can be done. And we hope, that with a full community effort, we’ll soon be welcoming our first refugee family into the Borough of Elmbridge.” If you’re a landlord or organisation and have a self-contained property that you would be willing to rent for at least 12 months, please get in touch. |
