MPs BACK MOTION CALLING FOR DUBS SCHEME TO REMAIN OPEN
3 March 2017
On Wednesday MPs voted 254-1 in favour of keeping the Dubs Scheme open. The vote is non-binding. But it sends a clear message ahead of the main vote next week.
The Government has been widely criticised for its announcement last month that it would close the Dubs Scheme – to resettle the most vulnerable unaccompanied child refugees – having bought just 350 children to the UK.
This motion – calling on the Government to continue consulting with local authorities about how many children they can take – is a step in the right direction. But it’s not the end of the fight. Labour Peer and former child refugee, Lord Dubs, who designed the scheme, said: “We need to make sure that all the MPs who have spoken up, in debates, on social media, in speeches and at the ballot [on Wednesday], come together and vote to save the Dubs Scheme next week… This is our last chance to put Britain back on the right side of history and save the Dubs Scheme.” TAKE ACTION Please write to your MP ahead of the vote on Tuesday 7 March and ask them to keep the Dubs Scheme open. |
