- If you are arriving from Ukraine, Surrey County Council has produced FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) about education for children arriving from Ukraine
What holiday activities are available for my children?
- Free kids clubs for refugees - Club4 arranged by Surrey County council - Anyone on free school meals should be given a voucher by their school, if you don't have a school place yet, you can contact us so that one of our hub leaders can refer you.
- We've made a list (see orange for holiday camps) of all the kids clubs we know of in the area , please note we cannot take any responsibility for the quality of actions of any of these clubs, we are purely signposting you to what's available
- Cycling - We tend to get bikes donated and also we teach people how to ride in the UK if that's needed. Subject to availability. Send an email to [email protected] to let us know your needs - age, height etc.
What childcare support do I get here in the UK?

How do I apply for benefits?
When and how do I apply for Universal Credit (UC)?
UC is the primary financial help you receive so you should apply straight away. Go to: www.gov.uk/universal-credit/how-to-claim NOTE: If you do not yet have a bank account please follow these steps: If a claimant does not have a bank account at the time they are making a new claim to Universal Credit, the following steps must be followed: during the new claim add 6 zeros (000000) for the sort code add 8 zeros (00000000) for the bank account number this will need to be done 4 times to progress the claim. If there is no option to say they don't have a bank account they will have to follow the above steps See also Citizens Advice Bureau - What is Universal Credit Can I get a Universal Credit advance? As long as they have a live UC claim, as well as a National Insurance Number, job centre can issue a full new claim advance. Weybridge Jobcentre covers over 90% of Elmbridge postcodes (in terms of UC claims) – and covers the following: KT7, KT8, KT10, KT11, KT12, KT13, KT14 7, KT14 9, KT15, KT16, and KT22 0. You can change or cancel a Universal Credit appointment, following DWP guidelines, by signing in to your Universal Credit Account or by phoning: 0800 169 0190 If you are on jobseeker’s allowance, you must prioritise your jobseeker’s activities, such as: attending interviews, job fairs, training courses, etc... If any of those activities are clashing with your UC signing in appointments with a coach, you can re-arrange your UC appointment as described above. Changing your UC appointment in advance, following DWP guidelines, provided you have a valid reason, will not affect your benefits. Driving -what are the rules around driving in the UK
If you have with you a non UK driving licence already
Check the government site for country of origin, but in most cases you can drive a normal sized vehicle or motorcycle for 12 months in the UK if you have a full and valid foreign licence. The UK has exchange agreements with Ukraine or other 'designated countries', which allow you to exchange your foreign licence with a UK one within the first 12 months . Otherwise you'd need to get a UK driving licence (see below)
If you have a Ukrainian driving licence
Holders of a Ukrainian driving licence can drive small vehicles (cars up to 3,500kg and motorcycles) for 12 months from the date they become resident in UK. To continue driving after this time, they must obtain a UK licence.
Ukrainian driving licences for cars can also be exchanged for the UK equivalent without the need to take a test. However, drivers who took a test in Ukraine before 28 December 2021 will only be granted entitlement to drive automatic cars when the UK licence is issued. This is because the Ukrainian driver licensing authority does not have information to confirm whether a test was taken in a manual or automatic vehicle before this date.
Read more here.
If you have a foreign car and you become resident or stay for more than 6 months
Then you must register and tax your vehicle in the UK.
Can I get help to pass my driving test?
In order to get UK licence Apply and follow the steps here www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence
You can get help to pass your theory test using apps, such as DVSA https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/official-dvsa-theory-test-kit/id463295925,
and then once you are practicing to drive, these videos https://youtube.com/c/DgndrivingCoUk or https://youtu.be/1kQSbgMkT5A
How expensive is it to run a car?
Three mandatory costs to consider other than fuel & fixing the car - annual Vehicle Tax, Insurance, and MOT (which is a check-up that your car is safe to drive). Check out full driving costs here

Can I get my own accommodation from the council?
Social housing in the UK is in very short supply, particularly for larger households, and particularly in Elmbridge as it is an expensive area and there is a great shortage of housing. There are very long waiting lists for social housing.
If you are in danger of homelessness and are in a priority group where the council has a duty to help you then they may be able to support you with emergency accommodation, but this might be in a bed and breakfast and might be outside of Elmbridge. You can find out more information including how to apply for social housing on the council’s website here Elmbridge Borough Council - Housing.

How can I get my own accommodation?
Whether you have children or not, your Universal Credit benefit can include rental help also known as Housing Benefit. You can check out the local housing allowance here .
Can look at general websites like rightmove for a property to rent. If you can show that you are employed, then your chances are much higher, and depending on your circumstances your benefit cap (max limit) might be removed. Finding housing can be very hard, but don't loose hope, there are some landlords who are willing to rent out to people with low income.
Our charity doesn't offer property search service but if you are homeless or vulnerably housed, Rentstart.org, is a local charity, and has a very useful guide to renting privately on low incomes. Many younger single English people, or couples, combine with friends to rent accommodation. Rentstart can occasionally help with families with children as well though mostly they tend to deal with those without children who aren't as high priority for the council as those with children. Phone line (you will require an English speaking person, as no foreign language translators) 01372 477167 based in Walton town centre.
If you are Ukrainian and need temporary accommodation less than 30 days, see yellow section below

Elmbridge CAN and Elmbridge council are working together to help ensure that re-matches can be arranged where there is a priority need for this, for example if there is a medical need or if there is an irreversible breakdown in relationships. Please speak to one of us in the first instance about this. There may be ways that we can help you resolve differences with our original host family.

What specific help is there for Ukrainians and their hosts? UPDATED July 2022
.
Help with If you are a Ukrainian refugee hoping to be hosted in Elmbridge, we are not a matching service , as there are national organisations that do that (See Reset), but we are currently liaising with Elmbridge Borough Council on how best to get visibility on local hosts. In the meantime we hope the links below are of use. Guidance on moving to the UK if you're coming from Ukraine.
If you are a host or if you have already arrived as a Ukrainian newcomer please read our Host's Guide to the first few weeks of sponsoring a Ukrainian Guest, put together by an existing Elmbridge host (or sponsor). It contains lots useful information for both hosts and guests, including what hosts need to do pre-arrival, on day one and in the first few weeks - and covers setting up a bank account, applying for school places, applying for universal credit, registering with a GP etc. If you need us please get in touch with us so we can put you in touch with services relevant to your needs.
Can you help me to find a sponsor? - At the moment, no , unfortunately we don't have enough resources to help with this. We are a small local charity trying to support refugees who have already arrived in the UK, in the Elmbridge area, and will gladly support you if you can get here. If you have not already done so, please visit Reset who are a national charity that can help with this Homes for Ukraine - A Reset service for community welcome
